Farmer Holding Fruit

Grab a British Apple

Us Brits can now enjoy a great variety of British Apples 52 weeks of the year.  This is thanks to an increase of home grown fruit by almost 80% in a decade, say growers.

With technology improving in Orchards, storage and during picking has enabled UK growers to supply supermarkets with apples throughout the year.

Did you know our British grown fruit has a 40% market share.  The industry is however, hoping to increase this percentage to 60% over the next decade.

British varieties are now available long after the harvesting season between August and November.  Apples are now being picked during this period, stored in cold storage systems.  This is controlled by oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen levels.  These are continually monitored which keeps them in perfect condition.

Braeburn apples improve in time stored.  Gala varieties will last for 12 months.  Being a Baker, I am delighted to hear that the good ole Bramley cooking apple, is now available all year round.  The gala apple only use to do well around April or May however, now the firm favourite will be available until July or August, even as far into September.

August - Discovery, Early Windsor, Delbarestivale.

September - Zari, Worcester Pearmain

October - Lord Lambourne, St Edmunds Pippin, Spartan.
